What is a color correction?
The word “correction” can be misleading as not all situations that require this service are due to a mistake. Sometimes that’s exactly why you need a correction, whether due to a professional mishap/misunderstanding or a color service gone wrong at home. It could also be due to wanting a drastic change, like going from dark to light, or vise versa. Even waiting too long between color appointments and having an excessive amount of outgrowth could be considered a correction. Typically a color correction implies that it’s a lot more work and will take more time than a regularly scheduled color service.
To help you decide whether or not you’re a candidate for a color correction, I’ve created a list of common situations that apply:
- You want a drastic color change like going from dark brunette to blonde, from dark brunette to red, or from blonde to a dark brunette (applies to colored hair as well as virgin hair)
- You got your hair heavily highlighted or lightened but an extended amount of time has passed since you’ve gotten a retouch and your outgrowth exceeds two inches
- You attempted to lighten your hair at home and it’s now orange, extremely brassy, it lifted unevenly and is blotchy, or the highlights were misplaced
- You’ve been coloring your greys at home and even though you’ve been using the same brand and the same color, your color is now uneven from roots to ends
- You got chunky highlights and now want natural looking, blended highlights.
- You wanted chunky highlights and they didn’t turn out as chunky as you wanted or are misplaced
- You have halo lights/racoon tail hair (like Alysa Liu) and now want to cover them up or want a different type of highlight
- You want your highlights lighter or they didn’t end up being the color you wanted
- You’ve been coloring your hair and now want to go back to your natural color
